Mesozoic Era
Mesozoic means “middle animals.” In the beginning of this era plants dominated, although reptiles soon became the main species. Thats why the era was nicknamed, “The Age Of Reptiles.” The Mesozoic Era ended in a mass extinction that killed 75% of living things. The climate was much warmer than today, and there was little difference between summer and winter. The average global temperature was estimated to be 60 to 50 degrees fahrenheit. A cooling in the climate began in the Cretaceous period. Pangea the supercontinent stretched across most of the worlds oceans. Pangea then split apart and formed Laurasia and Godwanaland in the Triassic period. The modern Mediterranean Sea formed 5.6 million years ago, ago the Atlantic and Indian oceans opened up. Dinosaurs dominated North America, and the first birds evolved. Conifer trees also evolved. An asteroid likely caused the mass extinction that killed many species, including the dinosaurus.
